A hot spring

I came across my first real hot spring in Iceland, which was just a few kilometres from the very remote and quiet lakeside place where I stayed two nights, 30 km north of Mývatn.

They use these hot springs for many things in modern Iceland. For electricity, for the heating of houses, for hot water, for swimming pools with "hot pots", and to grow fruits and vegetables in heated greenhouses. Here at this spring is such a big greenhouse area. They grow tomatoes and cucumbers, explained Dave from England who works there and drinks his gin and tonic(s) at Heiðarbær across the road, where a caravan park with a restaurant, bar and Internet connection is.

Running away from the area unused was a hot water creek that steamed. I tested it with my finger: too hot to go in!
