If you wonder why I didn't post anything yesterday and now four postings at once, it's because I'm staying for two nights at a place that has no Internet. I'm currently writing this in a restaurant/caravan park nearby.

In Akureyri at the tourist information they informed me that I do not need to updrade my rental car to a 4x4 car to navigate around the blocked part of the ring road in the south. There are "car ferries" operating, these are big trucks that take small cars "piggyback" across the river. I might have to wait for a few hours, but it should work and will be a lot cheaper than a rental car upgrade.
